Development versions have the latest fixes and optimizations, but their constantly changing nature means that little testing has been done on them and unknown bugs may appear. The latest beta version of Dolphin is a good choice to start with: our betas are well tested and should give a reliable experience. IGPs older than the HD4000 are not supported. A full fledged discrete graphics card is still highly recommended. Intel: Iris Pro iGPUs will handle Dolphin well in D3D in Windows, though there are driver issues with the other graphics backends on that OS. Old (6+ years) and/or low end GPUs may struggle, and are not recommended. AMD generally favors D3D over OpenGL, so we recommend D3D for these GPUs. Old (6+ years) and/or low end GPUs may struggle, and are not recommended.ĪMD: Any modern mid-range or better AMD GPU will perform well in Dolphin with Ubershaders. NVIDIA: Any modern mid-range or better NVIDIA GPU will be able to play Dolphin in HD resolutions with Ubershaders quite well. If you do not have those extensions, performance will suffer. Dolphin emulates a console that functions very differently from a traditional PC, and uses the latest D3D and OGL features to reduce overhead. However, the biggest thing to watch for is making sure the GPU supports DirectX11.1 and OpenGL 4.4. The more powerful the graphics card, the more pixels and enhancements you can throw at it before you’ll see slowdown. Which GPU do I need? ¶Ĭhoosing a GPU for Dolphin is a fairly simple task. Meanwhile, others struggle to run full speed at all times on even the most powerful of processors. Some games only use features that are easy to emulate, and thus will run full-speed on just about any computer that supports Dolphin. But, in the end, it does what the game instructs it to do. It's important to remember that Dolphin is a console emulator with tons of optimizations and features. Note: For more information regarding CPU performance, please check out this handy benchmark that contains results from tons of users. As such, we can only recommend Ryzen or newer for Dolphin among AMD's line of processors.įor more details, such as specific CPU recommendations, CPU comparisons, or what hardware you should purchase to get playable speeds on a specific game, please ask on our Hardware Forum before purchasing. Be wary of U and Y series processors, as their reduced clockspeeds often struggle with Dolphin's workload.ĪMD: Dolphin's workload didn't match the strengths of AMD processors until the Ryzen line. Newer generations will give higher performance per clock, and K series processors will allow for overclocking to gain extra performance. Intel: Within a single generation of processors, the difference between i5 and i7 (hyperthreading/extra core counts) don't affect Dolphin very much. Newer processors are generally better than older ones, thanks to the increased IPC that comes with newer architectures. With four cores, Dolphin has two cores for the main emulation threads, a third core for other tasks, and another core for the operating system and background tasks to run without taking resources from the emulator. Additional cores will not make Dolphin go any faster, though an "extra" core that Dolphin isn’t using may help slightly by keeping background tasks from using the same cores as Dolphin.Īccordingly, the perfect CPU for Dolphin has high IPC, a high clock rate, and four cores or more. Dolphin is a dual core application that relies upon IPC (Instructions Per Clock) and clockspeed for performance. FaceTime calls may be scheduled, and guests can be added. For instance, addresses appear on Apple Maps, and you may choose to get updates about the journey time. It makes it simpler to utilize shared calendars, like shared iCloud Calendars, and is useful if you need to balance your personal and business calendars.Ī to-do list was formerly available in Apple’s Calendar, but tasks are now kept in Reminders, a different program. You may add calendars from Exchange, Google, Yahoo, or AOL accounts. You may create as many local calendars as you wish, and all of them will sync via iCloud. You may expect your computer to understand what you mean when you type something like “go for a walk at noon,” thanks to natural language processing. On the Calendar, you may click and drag to set an appointment. It’s easy to add appointments click the + sign. Still, struggling to decide where to start? Your Mac already comes with Apple’s Calendar, which is slick, practical, and effortless to sync with your iPhone and iPad.

Ratings for the Bay Area and California, updated every 10 minutes GM’s $1.1 billion infusion will come as soon as the deal closes. SoftBank will invest $900 million initially and $1.35 billion when Cruise’s autonomous cars are ready for deployment. “GM knows how to do large-scale industrial production,” he said. While Ammann ducked questions about where the robot taxis would launch, he said the fleets will be able to grow rapidly. “Beyond that, we see opportunities to move goods, package delivery and other use cases.” GM continues to see ride-hailing as the obvious first use for robot cars, GM President Dan Ammann said. “The complexity requires a very large number of people.”Ĭruise recently moved into new headquarters at 1201 Bryant St., from which its dozens of self-driving Chevy Bolts head out around the clock for tests on city streets with backup drivers. “Developing this technology is one of the most challenging problems of our generation,” he said. “Equity is a really attractive element of working at Cruise and will really help us in the war to acquire the best talent in the space.”Ĭruise now has 740 full-time employees in San Francico and has increased its employee count by 40 percent a quarter, a pace Vogt expects to continue. “That’s just the tip of the iceberg of what the company’s value could be,” he said. That lofty valuation, and future upside, will be a potent recruiting tool, said Kyle Vogt, Cruise CEO and co-founder. The investment values the business at $11.5 billion - a huge premium to what GM paid, which was between $500 million and a billion, depending on incentives. SoftBank will get a 19.6 percent stake in the newly formed GM Cruise Holdings LLC. “We were blown away by the ability of the Cruise team to iterate quickly, both for hardware and software (and) the ability of GM once this is ready to put production to work,” said Michael Ronen, managing partner of SoftBank Investment Advisors, which manages the fund. But the huge capital commitment from the car company and the year-old, $100 billion fund backed by Japan’s SoftBank Group, Apple and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, among others, increases the likelihood that the deployment will happen on time and at a massive scale. GM, which bought San Francisco’s Cruise two years ago, has already said it expects to put autonomous vehicles on the road in 2019. Some vacations are arguably better as a party. There are always small cuts you can make to reduce the amount you’re spending while on vacation. Opt for a walkable destination or some place with good public transportation to avoid pricey add-ons like renting a car. You can also limit the number of excursions to afford the ones you’re most excited about. If dining isn’t the main objective of your trip, buy groceries so you can cook food in your accommodations. In reality, you’re probably on a budget, so you’ll need to consider what you value most on this trip. Ideally, vacation would mean going out for meals every night, trying every activity possible, and shopping at any store you see. Determine what you’re comfortable cutting. It’s a cost-effective way to enjoy the natural splendors the world has to offer. Rent camping equipment such as thick sleeping pads to make your tent even more comfortable, or check the price of renting an RV or a cabin. Opting for the great outdoors doesn’t mean you have to forgo modern conveniences. An ultra-affordable way to do that? Go camping. When most people travel, it’s to see beautiful sights and relax. If you head to a country in Central America, your dollar will go further than it would in Florida: You’ll find accommodations, meals, and other activities for a lesser price point than stateside.ĭo your research as you decide where to go for vacation, and make sure to consider the costs and benefits of similar alternatives before you settle on the perfect spot. On the other hand, you may find lodging or activities are cheaper when you do decide to depart the U.S. The beaches in Alabama, for example, boast incredible white sand that makes for a picturesque scene, and you’ll find plenty of incredible Airbnbs and hotel rooms for a lower cost. Often, we have our heart set on a particular destination when dreaming of vacation, but if you can be flexible with location, do it.įor example, domestic flights are often more affordable than international ones, and you can find beaches in the United States that are just as gorgeous as the ones in the south of France. It needs your mobile phone to be able to cast to it, without this it won't work. Chromecast cannot work without your mobile phone. The article author compares many aspects but forgets one very important one, i.e. Roku still boasts the best search in the business, trawling hundreds of services, to bring you not only the exact show, movie or actor you're looking for, but the best price as well. Unified searches on streaming players have been around for a few years, and they've come a long way in that time. The Fire TV Stick has every channel you could want, plus a good, but not great selection of games. It still has thousands of channels and even a few games. The Chromecast lagged behind the other two, as it's long lacked support for Amazon Video without some cumbersome work-arounds - but that issue will be solved in the coming months as Amazon and Google have stopped their bickering. Roku's paltry gaming selection is best left untouched. You've already seen a lot of them on your Android or iOS phone, but playing Shovel Knight or DuckTales: Remastered without a dedicated gaming device is pretty cool. The only major difference between the two is that the Fire TV has an eclectic, but still pretty decent selection of casual games. Cable replacements, TV channel apps, music services - you're totally covered on either platform. Each one has more than 5,500 options, from big names like Netflix and Hulu to niche channels for horror movies, fitness content or entertainment of a more risqué nature. When it comes to sheer, unparalleled variety of channels, Roku and Amazon offer a pretty similar selection. No one buys a streaming player because of how beautiful its menus look people buy these devices to watch stuff (and, occasionally, to listen to stuff, or play stuff). The Roku has a beautiful interface, but the Chromecast has almost no interface whatsoever, and there's nothing easier than that. You'll eventually get to what you want to watch, sure, but unless you're in the mood for whatever movie or TV show Amazon recommends next, you'll have to skip through a few obtrusive menus to get there. The Fire TV Stick also lets you customize app placement, but clutters up the whole experience with a disproportionate focus on Amazon content. If you don't want to futz around with your phone while you're watching a program, the Roku's remote gives it an advantage overall, but you'll still have to learn the ins and outs of a new OS. There's very little between you and what you want to watch, aside from a few extra menu items and some (admittedly intrusive) advertisements for other channels. You can organize channels any way you see fit, placing them into neat rows and columns. The Roku Stick takes a close second, because it lets you customize your own home screen. It's hard to see how the process could be any simpler. (If not, you're at least intimately familiar with it well before you ever plug a Chromecast into your TV.) To use the Chromecast, you simply load up apps you already know how to use, then press a single button to cast the content. Once again, the Chromecast's interface is only as good as your smartphone or computer - but there's a good chance that this interface is very good. While the setup process for all three dongles is very easy, the Chromecast's is almost foolproof. The Roku lets you enter your username and password through a smartphone or computer the Fire TV stick doesn't, which is a feather in the former's cap. The Roku Stick and Fire TV Stick both have more-traditional setup processes, which require you to sign in, at which point the devices will sync your existing accounts. (You do need to download the Google Home app on Android or iOS, or a similar extension on Chrome, but you don't need to use the app for anything except modifying settings.) There's nothing to "set up," really, aside from getting the Chromecast connected to your network. Since it doesn't have a navigable OS of its own, the device is dependent on your smartphone or computer, and all the menus you're already familiar with. There's no denying, though, that the Chromecast has the easiest setup of the three. (If more than 10 minutes goes by between you removing the streaming player from the box and watching your first show, something has gone grievously wrong.) All you need is a Roku, Google or Amazon account and a Wi-Fi network. The Chromecast is not only the most attractive of the three devices, but it's also suitable to the widest variety of HDMI ports.Įach of the three devices is easy to set up. That you can either let it dangle or clasp the wire magnetically to the device's body means it's suitable for a wide variety of setups. The device's circular shape is attractive, even though you probably won't see it much, as it stays hidden behind your TV. The Chromecast, on the other hand, not only comes in a couple of different colors, but also attaches via a flexible HDMI wire by default. |
